Cut to the Chase: My Journey into Video Editing

Film editing is now something almost everyone can do at a simple level and enjoy it, but to take it to a higher level requires the same dedication and persistence that any art form does.

I’ve always loved how movies spark emotions, pulling us into the lives of characters on screen.

At work, I had the chance to create training videos, and that’s where I discovered the power of editing. I found myself obsessing over pacing, transitions, and how small changes could completely transform a video. That experience planted a seed, and now, I’m ready to fully commit.

2025 is officially my Year of Editing. I want to go beyond dabbling—this year, I’ll be diving deep into editing software, studying film and TV cuts, and pushing my creativity to new levels.

Whenever I take on a new skill, the first thing I do is gather the best resources to guide me. To start, I’ve enrolled in a three-month online course called The Go-To Editor, where I’ll get hands-on experience in narrative editing alongside 30 other aspiring and professional editors. I’m excited to break down scenes, refine my technique, and truly understand what makes an edit work.

I’ve also lined up a few additional resources—books, online classes, and YouTube channels—that I’ll share in future posts as I work through them. Alongside these, we’ll be studying films and TV shows, not just to break down their editing techniques, but to gain a deeper appreciation of storytelling, pacing, and the art of filmmaking as a whole.

I’ll be documenting my entire journey—sharing insights, lessons learned, and creative breakthroughs along the way.

If you’ve ever been curious about video editing, storytelling, or just love movies as much as I do, stick around—this is going to be an exciting ride!
